Speaker Bios:
Peter Gwynn, Principal, Lean Implementation Services, Inc. "The Power of Lean"
Having been actively involved in the Lean Construction movement since the mid-nineties, Peter has experienced firsthand how Lean Construction improves project outcomes by unleashing the knowledge, expertise, and experience of the construction workforce. Lean Construction is primarily a philosophy - a set of ideas and ideals - that become embedded in a team's culture and influence the way it plans, problem solves, and executes. Lean Construction is also about - albeit to a lesser degree - a set of work practices and enabling tools that are selected and configured on a case-by-case basis. Peter will discuss how these interdependent elements unleash the power and potential of the construction workforce.
Philip Patrick Sun, AIA, Institutional Consulting Practice Leader, Jacobs Global Buildings. “A Designer's Perspective on Lean Project Delivery"
Philip will discuss his recent efforts in Lean Project Delivery through process mapping, BIM, target costing, systems integration and optimization, and decision management on the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, CA. In particular, he will explore the challenges of getting the team to make decisions, helping team members understand each other’s differences, and discouraging local optimization.
Next Meeting Preview: Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Speaker Romano Nickerson, Boulder Associates.

LCI Houston Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Houston Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the Houston area. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in the Houston area.
We are dedicated to exploring the three opportunities provided by Lean Project Delivery (LPD):
-Impeccable coordination to create predictable work flow
-Projects as a production system to change the structure of work in design and construction.
-Project as a collective enterprise to align financial incentives.
